Team XLink has just released a new version of XLink Kai, a program that allows you to play System Link and Ad Hoc games globally over the internet. The best thing is, its absolutely free!

Quote:
What's the point?

XLink Kai(info) 7.4 began a few months ago to address the following issues:
1. Internationalization - the existing Kai UI does not support many languages and character encodings.
2. Platform Independence - Linux and OS X client software is no longer feature compatible with the Windows client
3. Unified Development - numerous versions and variants of the engine and client exist creating compatibility issues and fragmented development/support.

Team XLink prides itself as a 'Global Community' of gamers. To us, this means people who speak different languages, who use different Operating Systems, and who live all over the globe should be able to connect with one another and make Team XLink their home. Our year to year userbase growth and concurrent player statistics tells us we've been making excellent strides towards our global ambitions. Still, to truly move forward with the project, we need to address infrastructure and compatibility issues so that we have a solid platform that encourages further growth. Kai 7.4 addresses these issues and provides a solid foundation for future plan that simply would not be possible with the previous versions of Kai.

So what's new?

The biggest change to Kai is somewhat invisible--the code. Kai was designed primarily as a Windows-based system with compatibility for Linux/OS X (and other *nix systems) added later through the Kaid project and numerous third-party clients. This created a rift in development where any features added to the Windows Engine and Client needed to be added to Kaid and the third-party clients needed to be updated. A small change in the Windows client required all the other clients to be updated. Updates to the Windows engine (ex: new PSP MAC addresses) required Kaid be updated. As developer interest in Kaid and the many clients waned, it has become increasingly difficult to add any new features without breaking existing compatibility for those not using Windows. To address this, Kai 7.4 uses a single codebase and non-proprietary libraries so that the same code that compiles the Windows binary also compiles under Linux, OS X, BSD, etc. This required removing all the MFC code from Kai and replacing it with platform-independent alternatives like the Boost and wxWidgets libraries. With this unified codebase, future updates and changes will be made available on all supported Operating Systems at the same time.

The most visible change found in Kai 7.4 is the Client Web UI. Instead of designing multiple User Interfaces for every supported OS and every language we decided to drawn on the strength of existing cross-platform technology: the web browser. The Kai 7.4 engine contains a small web server which serves the client to your web browser (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer(info), etc.) and communication between the web browser and the Engine is achieved using Ajax programming. Aside from the obvious elimination of platform compatibility issues, switching to a browser-based client has some wonderful side effects:
1. Updates and additions to the client are served immediately without the need to restart the Engine.
2. The client is 'skinable' allowing users to develop and share their own customizations.
3. Kai can integrate other web technologies such as streaming audio and video.
4. Kai can be controlled using embedded systems with compatible web browsers (ex: iPhone).
5. The Kai engine can be accessed and controlled remotely via the web browser ( chat from work/school )

Another notable improvement found in Kai 7.4 is the support for uPnP routers. Most modern routers support uPnP allowing on-the-fly port mapping. When started behind a uPnP router, Kai just works--no port forwarding or router configuration required.

Lastly, all language has been stripped out of both the Engine and the Web UI Client and replaced with language templates. Currently, English and Japanese translations are available; however, support for Korean, Spanish, and many other languages are being added as translation becomes available through the community.

Via [ Team XLink ]

Rock Band 2 Announced

The first details are emerging about Rock Band 2, and it looks like EA and Harmonix are doing a lot of things right with the sequel. This proves to be a welcomed change of pace from some of EA's other franchises (*cough*, *cough*, Madden). It looks the game will be hitting the 360 this September, followed by the Wii, PS3, and PS2 versions "later in the year".

Quote:
1. Better Hardware
According to Harmonix: "Quieter, more realistic, and more reliable instruments..."

2. Third Party Hardware
"We're also actively welcoming new peripheral makers to make instruments for our game. Just like real instruments, we want players to be able to choose what instruments they use..."

3. Backwards Compatibility
Songs you purchased for Rock Band will work for Rock Band 2. Future Rock Band songs will work for both games.

4. More Meaning
"We have several new modes that not only provide new ways for you to experience your music library, but also new ways for you to transition from Expert to real instruments..."

Backwards compatibility is a huge plus, and to me a definite advantage over Guitar Hero IV. It's good to finally see the songs I buy not become a complete waste when I sell the old game to buy the sequel (I'm looking at you, Guitar Hero II). Plus, with the "quieter, more realistic, and reliable instruments" (read: We added a sunburst to the guitar.), I may actually spend more time playing my drums/guitar, and less time sending them in for repair. I'm sold.

Really though, more meaning? If Harmonix ever really wants to create a true parallel between the Rock Band guitar and the real guitar, they're gonna need a bit more than five buttons. But hey, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt with the "transition from Expert to real instruments..." thing. They did a pretty damn good job making the guitar look "real" this time around, so I suppose anything is possible.

Via [ Gizmodo ]

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 - DLC

The Fan Pack includes an Update for the game and DLC (downloadable content). The first thing that may come to mind is: “Is this free?” Yes it is, including the DLC. This pack will be available via Xbox Live Marketplace, PlayStation Network and ubi.com in July 2008.

*** Update Features ***

New Ranks
An additional 99 Elite Ranks have been added for bragging rights. For those of you who are already Elite, you may have noticed that your XP continued to accumulate while playing. Once you have the update, your XP will automatically be applied towards the new Elite ranks, so it is possible that you have already ranked up multiple times past Elite.

New A.C.E.S.
A total of 100 A.C.E.S. are available for each category: Marksman, CQB and Assault. Each A.C.E.S. level past 20 will reward you with 5000 XP that applies to your rank. For players who have already reached A.C.E.S. 20 and continued to collect A.C.E.S. points, you will be happy to know that the update will automatically advance you to the level you have earned. For example, if you have enough A.C.E.S. points to reach Marksman 25, you will automatically be at Marksman 25 and earn 25000 (5000 x 5) towards your next Rank.

Grenade Indicator
When you are within the damage radius of a Frag or Incendiary grenade, an indicator will appear on-screen telling you which direction it is. The indicator can show multiple grenades at once.

Weapons & Gadgets Balancing
Here are a couple of notes about Weapons and Gadgets:
• Explosion delay of the incendiary grenade has been increased
• Detonation speed of the C4 has been slightly increased
• Increased the damage of Sniper Rifles at long range
• Increased the base accuracy of the Light Machine Guns
• Adjusted the rate of fire for some of the Assault Rifles, Shotguns and an SMG
• Sped up the time it takes to zoom in & out with weapons, making it more responsive

To better clarify: the zoom for all firearms have been significantly sped-up and you can now fire DURING the zoom transition.

Respawns in Team Deathmatch – Host Option
An added host option has been added for Random Respawns. Random Respawns OFF will play like the classic Versus style where each team spawns in their designated Alpha or Bravo base. Random Respawns ON will have your players spawn randomly throughout the map after they die the first time.

Voice Chat – Host Option
Added as a host option for Player Match & System Link, players now have the option to talk to their team mates while dead.

Score in Deathmatch
Displayed on the bottom left of the HUD in Deathmatch, players can now see their score along with the top opponent’s score.

Team Leader - Spawn Change
Players now respawn next to the leader by default, unless players specifically choose to spawn back at the base.

Show Dead Players in Lobby
Players who no longer have lives remaining will now have a skull icon displayed next to their name in the pause menu.

Terrorist Hunt Spawning
Terrorists will no longer spawn right in front of you or behind you, or in a room you just cleared.

* * * * *

High Stakes Setting
High Stakes is a host option for every Versus mode that really pushes tactical gameplay to the next level. Here’s a detailed description of High Stakes:

Limited HUD (High Stakes)
The Radar is disabled. Enemies will not be visible on the Tactical Map (back button on 360/select button on PS3). Grenade indicator is disabled.

Health System (High Stakes)
Health regen is disabled. If you are shot and close to death, you’ll enter a visual state of critical health (screen turns monochromatic).

Cover System (High Stakes)
The cover system as been changed in High-Stakes mode to encourage players to peek instead of pop-n-shoot. The camera has been moved so your character cannot look past their cover unless they expose themselves around a corner.

Weapons & Gadgets (High Stakes)
Aim Assistance has been completely disabled. Bullet spread has also been increased when not zoomed-in (you will notice your crosshair indicators are much wider when not in zoom). Realistically, a person holding a gun would have better aim when zoomed-in than when he’s walking around. This encourages players to really take aim instead of run-n-gun. Also remember that the zoom time has been sped-up and you can now fire WHILE you zoom in and out. Players now have less ammunition (1 for each gadget you choose and less clips for your guns) so you really need to play conservatively and rely on precision use of ammo.

Kill Camera & Friendly Fire (High Stakes)
Kill Camera is always disabled and Friendly fire is always enabled.

*** DLC ***

THREE FREE MAPS
There are three maps included in the free DLC: Murdertown – Dark, CQB Training – Dark and best of all the much-requested fan favourite Calypso Casino! The three map layouts have not been changed. The re-lit “Dark maps” have a very eerie atmosphere, and may require players to use night vision to spot enemies. Calypso Casino returns with updated lighting and textures. The three maps are playable in all Versus modes and Terrorist Hunt.

source: http://rainbowsixgame.us.ubi.com

Looks like rumors have resurfaced about Microsoft liscensing out the actual Xbox 360 console to third party companies. If this is the case, it could make for a lot of interesting possibilities...

The last time we saw the rumor of Microsoft licensing Xbox 360 technologies to other companies was a few years ago, but EGM's got a fresh update to it. Their rumor column says that Microsoft might be licensing third-party manufacturers to build Xbox 360 hardware that can play off-the-shelf Xbox 360 discs. That's right.

What would be the point to this? Kotaku points out that previous game systems like a Panasonic Q, which was the GameCube + DVD player, served to help bring in software money, but lower development costs for Nintendo because they don't have to spend effort making new hardware. In Microsoft's case, imagine what would happen if a company built an Xbox 360 with a Blu-ray drive. Eh?

[ Gizmodo ] Via [ EGM ]

Rockstar Games let slip that the game supposedly cost $100 million to make. This breaks the previous record of $70 million. This massive figure is a sign of the video game industry's expansion, and a good reason not to pirate games. Funny thing is, Rockstar has gained all that money back (probably doubled it) in less then these 2 days.

In this, the 20th year of this storied game franchise, as far as I was concerned there was only one choice.
Grand Theft Auto 4 ... LEAKED?!

Yes, it's true, Grand Theft Auto 4 has been leaked. Apparently, this is only pertaining to the PAL version of the game, unless someone can come forth and say for sure that the NTSC version was also cracked. Does this spell disaster for Grand Theft Auto 4? No, not necessarily. Many people are saying that it may jeopardize the possibilities of a PC version in the future because so much money will have already been lost that opening up the game in the PC market would only be asking for more piracy. Those critics may be correct. After all, you don't see Microsoft or Bungie talking about Halo 3 on the PC do you? Halo 3 was also leaked to the internet about one week prior to its release just as Grand Theft Auto 4 was. Let's hope both make their way to the PC platform, but more importantly, it should be stressed that you should BUY games worth buying, and with a franchise like the Grand Theft Auto series, you know this next installment will be worth your 50-60 clams.

Xbox 360 Price Cut Confirmed for Europe

Last week, we told you about the rumored European price cut, which was expected to have the Xbox 360 Arcade’s current price of £199.99 to something closer to £170. Well, today Amazon unofficially confirmed this price cut after it dropped the price of all Xbox 360 editions. The Xbox 360 Arcade is now available for as low as £149.99, while the Premium is on sale for £189.99 and the Elite for £249.99.

After rumor and speculation that only followed after more rumors and MORE speculation, it's finally confirmed that Microsoft has made a pretty drastic price cut for European Xbox 360 shoppers. In fact, it even cuts some of the competition. The Xbox 360 arcade version will now be selling for a price of £199.99, which makes it cheaper than the Nintendo Wii by £50. Microsoft seems vigilant on making an impact in the living room, and after what many would consider a failed console, the first Xbox, many skeptics and analysts are now saying that Microsoft is leading a much stronger front than it had years prior.

I am guessing the dramatic price drop Amazon had for a few hours ($79 for a 360 HD-DVD player coming with the choice of 5 free HD-DVDs) made Microsoft decide to make another price drop. Another reason is the Blu-Ray dominance at the moment and Toshiba chipped in to make a price drop happen.

Well it doesn't matter how it was done as long as it was. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.

As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. I would like to take this moment to thank you each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state.

At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.

Thank you again for helping make Xbox LIVE everything that it is today!

Sincerely,
Marc Whitten

General Manager, Xbox LIVE

A free arcade game...thats all? Microsoft needs to do better then this. Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two, stated, “With Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar is setting a new standard for next generation video games. Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms. We all recognize that perfecting the game is vital and I can assure everyone it will be worth the wait. We owe it to the game’s millions of fans, to our dedicated development team, and to our shareholders to make sure that Grand Theft Auto IV is a groundbreaking gaming experience that takes maximum advantage of next generation technology.”

I guess all of us die-hard GTA fans will have to wait till next year untill we can get our greedy little hands on this baby. But, by the sounds of it, it's gonna be worth the wait. Simple as that. If by chance your 360 does not say there is an update available (rarely) give it an hour or so and try again. Then then update will come up.

Also, DivX has been reported working. It is not 100% yet but more like 90%. So for all the DivX lovers out there, this is a major update for you. In the tests, the 360 could play almost ALL the DivX movies we put on it.

So what are you waiting for? Go UPDATE.

The CPU sees the biggest reduction in size, the new core being about 75% the size of the old one, while both GPU components are around 85% the size of their predecessors.
It's possible that all three chips are now 65nm, or a mixture of 65nm and 80nm.Needless to say, the chips are all smaller, which should yield some nice power savings.

For some of you have never heard of it, Xlink is a program which allows you to play enabled LAN
games throughout your Xbox or 360. If you are a Halo game worshiper and you just can't afford the cash
to battle it on Live, then this program is just right for you.

So is this big news you ask? No. After snooping around throughout the arenas, I was shocked to find Halo 3
being put into the Xlink server. Now everybody can enjoy their fun moments as they did with their
previous Halo games, but with much more great adventure packed games.

Note, that XBC(XboxConnect) also lets you connect through Halo 3 in System Link, all you need to do is go under
the Halo 2 icon and you are all ready to start.

This was an article written by Slick. That is Halo 3 in the picture!

(This is an example of what I mean. But now that may have changed.....

Toshiba supposedly nixed the rumor of a Tosh-branded Xbox 360 with built-in HD DVD? Well, get this: xboxscene was contacted by Nelsom Bostock Communications, Toshiba's PR company (in the UK at least), and asked to take down the post (which they haven't). According to NBC, "The comment that ran initially on stuff.tv in relation to the Xbox 360 was a misquote." The quote that Toshiba's PR company wants us to run says, "Toshiba has no comment to make on this matter. The Xbox 360 is not a Toshiba product."

Wow. This may mix some peoples feelings this Christmas. Should you go and buy a 360 knowing that next Christmas you MIGHT be able to go out and buy one with built in HD DVD? I say, go out and buy one already. HD DVDs won't become really popular until next Christmas anyway and then you can buy the little adapter. Besides this would jack up the 360 by about $200 anyway. Who wants to pay $559 core a premium 360? Not me. Especially not paying all at one time.

We will update this when we get more info.

Lightning Talks is a daily event at Chaos Communication Congress (C3/CCC). It consists in one hour of several short (limited to 5mins) talks. In a very short presentation a masked 'hacker' showed an Xbox 360 booting up King Kong (the game, by ubisoft). After loading the game a screen pops up showing an Xbox 360 logo, a Mac logo and Tux (the Linux Penguin) and the words "coming soon...". I also noticed a small PCB is hanging out of his Xbox360 and he's using a laptop (Apple Macbook pro?), but it's not really clear what he's doing with it. Those who followed hacking discussions might remember hackers did some research around the vector shaders in the King Kong demo on the Xbox 360 Kiosk Disc (that ran from recordable media). The demo (and final game too) allow to modify the shaders (they are not checked/signed). However no exploit to take control of the machine was found back then ... so either this hacker found something here, or he's just showing us his custom modified shaders ;) That's all the details we have for now.

Enjoy!

"GameStop: Is the IPTV feature going to be a dashboard update?

Chris Satchell: How we're doing it at first is we're working with telecommunication partners who are intending to deliver an IPTV service and saying, "Here's a different kind of box you can use. Instead of just having a standard set-top box, use an Xbox 360. It gives you new services to provide your customers, and for gamers it gives them a really cool combination of next-generation television and next-generation gaming."

I think where you'll first see it will be in partnership with these telco partners who are doing IPTV. Now, later on, we're looking at, "Well, should we do an update to allow people who've got just an Xbox 360 to get to some of the same services rather than having to get it from a telco?" We're looking at both, but first you're going to see it from our partners.

GS: If Microsoft chooses to make IPTV available to all Xbox 360 owners, will upgrading be as simple as a dashboard update?

CS: If we do open it up so that our current users can get to the service, we're not quite sure how we'll deliver it. Of course, we have a great system with [Xbox] Live, so it's entirely possible that we could do it as an upgrade. It's entirely possible we could give it to you on a disc and you could just install it. There are all sorts of ways we can give it to you. Obviously our preference normally is to do everything online because that's where people are at.

GS: This might be too early to ask, but are you guys discussing how much this will cost?

CS: An IPTV and Xbox service, how much would it cost? Really, that's for our partners to define because they're likely going to bundle it in some way, kind of like when you go to Comcast and go, "Hey, I want my Internet phone, I want my Internet, I want my movies," and they do packages. [IPTV and Xbox 360] will probably be the same type of thing--that's really up to our partners and not us to set price. What we're providing is the next generation of technology and giving them something that nobody else is: full gaming with this incredible television service and the Live network as well.

GS: All this cool HD stuff that you're talking about starts to take up space. The 20GB for a lot of people is already starting to fill up. Seeing how Microsoft has been great about responding to customer needs on the Xbox 360, can you speak to larger-capacity hard drives?

CS: That's not really something we're looking at today. We're very open to feedback on it. As we produce these services, if we see an increase in pressure that's something that will be interesting to look at, but there isn't any announcement today about any new configuration that may or may not be happening.

GS: What can you tell us about the HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 rumors that have been going around?

CS: We're always working on prototypes and new technologies and just playing with stuff in Redmond to see what's interesting. I think at the moment we have the widest available connections on the system. If you want to get great HD, I think we've got a good solution for that. In the future it's interesting to see where standards evolve to. I think one of the problems that the whole industry, us and entertainment, are facing at the moment is we're in this world where standards are evolving very quickly.

We have different high-definition standards for discs that we know are competing at the moment. We think HD-DVD is going to be the right way to go, but really it's all about choice in that system so that's why we're offering these sort of services with downloads--skip that whole "format wars" problem. With other standards, audiovideo standards, they're evolving very quickly as well. We're obviously keeping an eye on that and saying, "What are the future standards and how do we give consumers the right choice for that?"

At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing."

Via [ Gamespot ]

Well, here's your answer: we landed pictures of what appears to be the second Xbox 360 -- the Xbox 360 v2, if you will -- codenamed Zephyr. (The original Xbox 360, if you recall, was codenamed Xenon.) The long rumored about and awaited update to the console won't just feature a new, cooler 65nm processor, it's also finally added an HDMI port for full digital 1080p pleasure, as well as a 120GB drive, just what the doctor ordered. The 120GB drive may or may not come bundled with the kit, we don't yet know, just as we also don't yet know how much a Zephyr 360 is going to run (we imagine it'll go for the same price as currently so they can keep up a little on their expanding margin). But our very kind Xbox insider seemed happy to let us know we'd be able to get them "soon." "

Yes, there were plenty of excellent games on the console. There were so many that we could only thing of one question that could settle the heated debate between games like Rainbow Six: Vegas and Oblivion: If you could have only one title on the Xbox 360, what would it be?

Gears of War sets the standard for graphics and sound on the Xbox 360, pure and simple. Gears looks so good that games that once scored in the 9s in graphics are now 8s. Thankfully, Epic's awesome third-person shooter is pretty fun as well, featuring a different take on the shooter genre that had every writer in the industry typing "stop and pop" ad nauseam. Although the single-player campaign is a bit short and the multiplayer options relatively slim, playing with a friend in the seamless cooperative mode or in the four-on-four team deathmatch will leave you white-knuckled and covered in a blissful sweat. And we haven't even started talking about Insane mode.

Runners-Up:
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion & Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas"

According to Variety, Microsoft's Xbox Live is gaining on iTunes tail in terms of downloading, consequently beating other competitors to the punch. "Due to "Xbox 360's direct connection to a TV and the console's focus on HD content, Microsoft can deliver both.
